5G Technology and Market
5G is the fifth generation technology standard of broadband cellular networks and the successor of the 4G standard. There are three main application areas of 5G for its enhanced capabilities, which are Enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB) for mobile broadband service, Ultra Reliable Low Latency Communications (URLLC) for mission-critical services, and Massive Machine Type Communications (mMTC) for connecting large number of IoT devices. 5G support much broader range of spectrum than 4G, extending from 400MHz to 100GHz. Low band < 1GHz for large area coverage. Mid-band range from 1GHz to 6GHz for Urban deployment and more capacity. High band range from 6GHz to 100GHz for multi-giga bit data rates and much more capacity. 5G can have over 10x download speed than 4G and more communication application areas in multimedia, automotive and industry. According to Grand View Research’s forecast, the 5G chipset market will reach 66.45 billion revenue in 2028 and comes out a 66.1 GAGR from 2021 to 2028.

- Andes Technology Corp. Announces EdgeQ to Deliver Converged 5G and AI Silicon Platform with AndesCore™ RISC-V License for the 5G Open Radio Access Network : 2021-01-26 Press
EdgeQ, a leading innovator in 5G base station-on-a-chip, will utilize an AndesCore™ RISC-V license to deliver industry’s first fully open and programmable 5G platform with integrated AI. EdgeQ has licensed the AndesCore A25 with Andes Custom Extension™ (ACE). ACE enables EdgeQ to design, extend, and customize their own instruction sets to achieve novel performance, features, and power profiles unmet by today’s solutions for the wireless infrastructure.
Hariprasad Gangadharan, Head of Silicon Engineering of EdgeQ
“EdgeQ was founded with the vision to provide an open programmable 5G platform that the industry can freely innovate and differentiate in a frictionless manner. Our clean-slate approach starts with a uniquely open RISC-V ISA based design that is deployable from the onset and easily modifiable by customers via open-source RISC-V tools. We are pleased to have Andes as a technology partner whose proven RISC-V IP not only realizes our product vision, but at its heart offers a customizable instruction set ideal for innovators like us to shape the world in a disruptively innovative manner.”
- Picocom Embeds 32 Andes N25F RISC-V Cores into Its 5G NR Small Cell Baseband SoC: 2020-08-24 Press
Picocom is championing ‘open RAN’ – the disaggregation of 5G radio access networks (RAN), which will open up the supply chain enabling new vendors to enter the market and compete. With Andes performance efficient cores, Picocom’s DU baseband offload SoC will deliver the needed flexibility, efficiency and performance to meet the challenges brought by 5G small cells.
Peter Claydon, President, Picocom
“Andes N25F 32-bit RISC-V cores are small, yet powerful. Their compact size allows Picocom to use 32 of them, in the form of two clusters, providing flexible processing for data throughputs at line rates up to 25 Gbps for packet header processing. Our engineering team found that using clusters of small RISC-Vs is more efficient than using a small number of larger cores. This clustered RISC-V approach enables us to retain maximum flexibility to cope with future 5G NR standards changes while delivering excellent performance in a very demanding application.”
